REVIEW: Sathanas - Thy Dark Heavens Blackmetal.com, 2001
7/10
Sathanas - Thy Dark Heavens - cover art When the Singapore based Pulverized Records was put to rest earlier this year Sathanas and other bands with them were suddenly left without a label to support them. The new album from Sathanas has instead been released by Blackmetal.com, owned by Deborah Jaffe of Master / Slave Relationship. Sathanas is not a pure black metal band since they have lots of thrash and death metal influences, something that helps in making their music a lot more interesting and dynamic. They should therefore also appeal to many fans who aren't hardcore black metal fanatics. Sometimes they remind me of Old Man's Child at their best even though Sathanas is more death metal-ish than their Norwegian colleagues. Most black metal bands aren't that generous when it comes to riffing but luckily Sathanas are as the listener will learn immediately from the great heavy rhythm on the opening track "Winged Black Spirit" which is one of the highlights of the album together with the magnificent "Queen Of The Netherworld". Even though the production is good enough I think Sathanas could improve in this area and with the right label support I think they could become one of the leading black/death metal hybrids.
