REVIEW: Saturnus - Martyre Euphonious Records, 2000
7.5/10
Saturnus - Martyre - cover art Many good words were spread about this “Martyre” when it was released some years ago, so I was eager to get this album from the Danish doomsters Saturnus. Honestly I don´t know whether this band is still active or is laid to rest, but right now I will concentrate on reviewing this their most popular release ever and (apparently) the best. Those of you into the neofolk scene will probably know Saturnus was the doom band where Kim Larsen, nowadays busy with his project Of The Wand And The Moon, conveyed his visions into music. This influence can be noticed in loose passages of “Martyre”, but eventually Saturnus has nothing to do with that folk ambient act. The music on this CD is based on doom metal and its songs are mostly painted with gothic traits, namely mellow whispering voices and “easy” structures that try to make the songs catchy and solid, succesfully in my opinion. Tiamat´s gothic period comes a bit to mind when hearing this one... also Lake Of Tears is a band I could quote as a similar one. Despite of this, I don´t find any act really similar to Saturnus since they use a wide range of elements in their music that makes this album hard to compare, but loose moments of “Martyre” remind me of the aforementioned bands and Anathema, Opeth, even some Pink Floyd... In fact “Martyre” is quite melodic and clean sounding, not for the use of keyboards, but because of the melodies made by guitars. It´s not certainly dark; it´s rather melancholic, hand in hand with friendly, mellow sounding melodies. It´s enjoyable and entertaining if you are fond of more melodic textures and far from depressive sinister moods. A nice listen, certainly!
