REVIEW: Satyricon - Rebel Extravaganza Moonfog Productions, 1999
9/10
Satyricon - Rebel Extravaganza - cover art "Rebel Extravaganza" contains over an hour of pure misanthropic filth. To no surprise this black metal band hails out of Norway as so many others. Even though Satyricon consists of only two permanent members (Satyr and Frost) the music is of rather high quality. You will not find any beautiful orchestral arrangements on this recording but what you will find is melodic black metal with some nice heavy riffing and grim vocals. Except from Satyr and Frost several other musicians appear on the album like Fenriz (Darkthrone) on percussion and Anders Odden (Cadaver Inc, Apoptygma Berzerk) on guitars. On the final track there is also a to me unknown nice-sounding female vocalist. There are some stand-out tracks on the album like "Tied in Bronze Chains", "Havoc Vulture" and "Prime Evil Renaissance" but the rest of the songs are almost equally good, except perhaps for the instrumental ones. "Rebel Extravaganza" is a black metal album way above average and it shows an incredible versatility that can not be found on many places in the black metal world today. Satyricon is one of the top Norwegian bands at the moment and if they continue to improve they can become really, really big. The album was recorded and mixed at Ambience Studios during March, April, May and June 1999.
