Satyricon and Cradle Of Filth did the unthinkable and signed record deals with
major record companies. Cradle signed a world wide deal with Sony while
Satyricon signed with Capitol Records for the Scandinavian territory. Whether
this is right or wrong doesn't really matter to me and is not the point of
this review either. With Emperor out of the picture Satyricon is undoubtedly
the leading Norwegian black metal band at the moment. "Rebel Extravaganza"
was the commercial breakthrough for the band and it charted at position 22 in
their home country, also giving them the chance to go on a European tour
together with Pantera. As that is one of the strongest releases ever from the
Norwegian black metal scene in my opinion I had my hopes up high when I sat
down to listen to "Volcano" for the very first time. I patiently listened to
the whole album from beginning to end and my reaction was: boring, what has
happened? Luckily that first impression did not last for very long. This is
one of those albums that will grow on you until you can't help but loving it.
The melancholic aggression and cold atmosphere that has become the trademark
of Satyricon can be found here as well but this album benefits or suffers
(depending on your point of view) from the cleanest and most powerful
production so far in the band's career. This will probably be the most
successful Satyricon album ever but despite a few great songs it doesn't
impress me as much as "Rebel Extravaganza" did. Still, this is an album well
worth the money spent on it.
