When you talk about metal
and discuss all the bands who helped to build what there is today there are
some bands who are often wrongfully looked over and Savatage is definitely one
of them. It is almost hard to believe that a band that formed way back in 1978
is still active and manages to compose music that breathes life and energy
even now that we have entered the 21st century. "Gutter Ballet" was recorded
in the good old days when both Oliva brothers were still alive (R.I.P. Criss)
and even though it isn't the best album in the band's long career it
features some classic Savatage songs like "Of Rage And War" and "Hounds".
This album could be seen as somewhat of a bridge between the older more
straight-forward Savatage and the newer more experimental and progressive band
that would come to compose unique rock operas together with symphony
orchestras. The band took its first trembling steps towards something new and
this also makes a mark on the song material for this album which is sometimes
almost a little immature even though this is actually the fifth album from the
band. The classic Savatage songs are still as great as ever though and it's
always nice to heard the powerful distinctive vocals from Jon Oliva. It's a
shame that he stopped singing after the next album because his voice was
simply made for heavy metal and rock'n'roll. As I have already mentioned
"Gutter Ballet" is not the best album that the band has produced but it is
definitely worth buying if you are a fan of the band or just love great music
in general. Stand-out tracks: "Of Rage And War", "Gutter Ballet",
"Hounds", "Thorazine Shuffle".
