REVIEW: Scala Mercalli - My Daemons Self-financed, 2004
7/10
Scala Mercalli - My Daemons - cover art The Italian band Scala Mercalli are no newcomers. They have been around since 1992 and have performed with well-known bands like Lacuna Coil and Shaman just to mention a few. A couple of members later on founded the band Centurion and these two bands have several things in common musically. The first reference that came to mind when listening to this four track promo, with which they hope to obtain a record contract, was mid-period Megadeth. The vocalist Bartolacci Chritian has a singing style that is very similar to Dave Mustaine's at times but his voice is more heavy / power metal sounding. This is basically a competent mixture of traditional 80s heavy metal and speed / thrash metal. The band is obviously serious about what they're doing as these four tracks have been professionally recorded and they all sound very mature, including their cover version of Iron Maiden's classic "Be Quick Or Be Dead". I personally don't think they will catch the interest of any of the major metal labels at the moment but they could very well end up with one of the second league labels such as Locomotive Music or Scarlet. The reasons for this is that their music is a little too generic and there are few surprises or passages that you easily remember. It takes a while to get used to the vocalist as well although he is a decent singer. More songs in line with "Banshee's Whisper" though and they will surely attract many fans.
