There are not enough great vocalists in the world in my opinion but I was recently lucky to find one on this album. Ok, Alexander Koch has been fronting several other bands like Spiral Tower, Powergod and Winter's Bane for years now and even though I have never had much to complain about in the past I have never appreciated him quite as much as I do after having heard the debut album from Scenes. His singing reminds of James LaBrie and David Coverdale at the same time but still he is not a copy of any of them, nor does it seem as if he's trying hard to follow in the footsteps of these world class vocalists. He has been gifted with a personal voice and to improve even further he has developed a personal style of singing throughout the years. This German orchestra started out as a duo project back in 1995 but it has taken long for them to get to this point. The wait and hard work eventually paid off though and "Call Us At The Number You Provide!" is a very solid, mature and carefully crafted piece of first class progressive metal.
Without falling victim to technical olympics trend, Scenes do not lack skilled musicians nor experienced song writers who know how to put emotions into music. Fans of various progressive oriented rock and metal bands like Dream Theater, Fates Warning and even Magnum should be able to appreciate the musical mosaic created by these Germans. Playful and rich in textures, they never reach the point of exaggeration and my attention is maintained throughout almost the entire recording which is more than you could say about most new releases of today. Scenes will not overtake pole position in the progressive metal genre but they have at least produced a very strong debut which sets the standard for their future work.
