REVIEW: Season Of Evil - Season Of Evil Self-financed, 2001
4/10
Season Of Evil - Season Of Evil - cover art So, the latest batch of promos arrives in my mail and, as customary for myself, I grab the first off the pile and throw it into the stereo. First up is a 6-song demo from SEASON OF EVIL, hailing from the bleakest prairie wastes of northern Illinois. SEASON OF EVIL play a very muddied form of mid paced, old school black metal that occasionally reminds me of HELLHAMMER and BEHERIT (mostly from the vocal delivery). Now, understand, of course, that HELLHAMMER and BEHERIT are exalted company but I cannot place SEASON OF EVIL anywhere near that quality (and those are primitive bands to begin with). The riffs are very simple, not very well played or written, and the few guitar solos present reveal poor playing. Poor production is pretty much expected from a demo, but this is not the intentionally poorly produced style of raw black metal. In short, overall, this is not particularly good. Is there anything redeemable here? Well, after all, this appears to be a first demo, so they deserve some credit for trying (I find it hard to poorly grade anyone who at least tries with a demo). Also, if the HELLHAMMER and BEHERIT influences are intentional, then they have some hope. But, their next demo will definitely require better playing and songwriting if there’s to be any future for this band. Next!
