REVIEW: Secrets Of The Moon - Antithesis Lupus Lounge, 2006
8/10
Secrets Of The Moon - Antithesis - cover art Formed in 1995 under the flag of an extreme darkness, german band Secrets Of The Moon released with "Antithesis" their third full-lenght, and definitely their best work to date. Progressive elements with an occult black/death attitude is their refined formula to build deeply fascinating and complex compositions. Reminding something of the most recent Enslaved material (i.e. that masterpiece that was "Isa"), particularly cause the elegance of songwriting, Secrets Of The Moon dress their songs of oniric suspance and mysterious atmospheres, a magicKal and ritualistic appeal which often fills the absence of that barbaric violence one could expect from a 'black' album. Sumptously balanced between epic and sweeping is the first ride of the album, the amazing "Versus", a song where their dramatic ability shines more than ever, close to the most nevrotic, paranoid and disturbant atmospheres of Tool. Even more eclectic and convincing are songs like "Confessions", ralented and hypnotic. As we simply understand, Secrets Of The Moon are sailing faraway from every stylistic restriction and definition; "Seraphim Is Dead" includes so many different section that anyone seem to recall a different sub-genre of the most obscure Metal. And in any of those it's excellent. Really spectacular are a most "classic" but no less creative song as "Ordinance", the rumbling journey of "Lucifer Speaks" and the frightening black hole of silence and shivers that is "Metamorphoses". Flawless both in its shape and in its conceptual, thematical and lyrical substance, "Antithesis" is a highly satisfying, mature and essential jewel of pure dark art.
