REVIEW: Secrets Of The Moon - Stronghold Of The Inviolables Cicatrix Records, 2001
7.5/10
Secrets Of The Moon - Stronghold Of The Inviolables - cover art Secrets Of The Moon is a German black metal band that was formed in 1995 and consists of ex-members of several other occult / black metal bands like Martyrium and Lazaard. Yet another bunch of boring Darkthrone fanatics I thought when I was about to listen to this disc but I was soon to realize how wrong I was. Sure, there are plenty of cold Darkthrone traces on this album, especially the production, some of the riffs and the vocals are very much done the Fenriz way but they manage to do it well unlike so many other of these clones. This is the atmosphere Mr. Nagell wanted to create with his cold, grim and harsh sound. Secrets Of The Moon have brought back this majestic sound and I am very glad that I got to hear this. There are also some Celtic Frost influences on this disc that can hardly be ignored, both in the form of driving rhythms and some mystical avantgarde sounds. While Satyricon, Dimmu Borgir and Cradle Of Filth are on their major label flirting streak there are still some bands who stick to the raw black metal that it all started out with and manage to pass on the tradition very well. Secrets Of The Moon deserves some real attention, especially if you are a fan of old Celtic Frost or Darkthrone. This is good!
