REVIEW: Secrets Of The Moon - The Exhibitions EP Lupus Lounge, 2005
7.5/10
Secrets Of The Moon - The Exhibitions EP - cover art Acclaimed black metal purveyors Secrets Of The Moon bring forth three songs presented under the EP format. Along with acts such as Nagelfar or Lunar Aurora, this band stands for quality in the style coming from Germany these dark days, but their black metal is different from those, as Nagelfar and Lunar Aurora delve in sonic turmoil and frolic in those maelstroms, Secrets Of The Moon manage another focus whose main trademark is the high concentration on creating solid rhythms. Their style reminds me some Satyricon lines (mainly due to the vocals) and Thorns, so modern black metal is what you have here, and that´s at least interesting. The first track “Bleakstar” begins with a pounding fast march and then comes an excellent Satyricon-esque melody that pulls the whole song ahead easily. “Exhibitions In The Great Zone” has wise rhythm changes and variety without leaving the solid patterns of songmaking the band exhibits everytime. The third track is a cover version from Darkthrone´s “Under A Funeral Moon”, and despite the rave comments in the promo sheet about the personal touch the band has given to the song, the performance is quite traditional and far from bold –and that´s not bad at all-, making it sound very similar to the original. Anyway, I must say after the first half of the song there´s a part when the band roams in a different landscape and melody which fits quite well. Hmmm, before listening to it, I thought for a moment they were going to do something in the vein of the Dead Can Dance cover included in the tribute album released through Greek label Black Lotus Records. This cover is neither a copycat nor an extravaganza offshot. Overall this digipak-EP includes material slower than the previous albums but don´t expect a lack of power and rawness for you´ll be disappointed: Secrets Of The Moon still delivers the goods with their black sound. By the way, no negative things to tell about the production, clean and powerful. Let´s wait for the forthcoming album to see the good things yet to come.
