REVIEW: Septicemia - Hopeless Age Self-financed, 2000
7.5/10
Septicemia - Hopeless Age - cover art Septicemia is a band from the Vienna area, Austria, that's been alive since July 1997. Their biography states that they play a mix of death and thrash metal but I think they should change their description since there seem to be more black metal influences, such as Darkthrone drums and some black vocals, than thrash metal ones (at least on this album). They have however incorporated elements from all the three mentioned styles of metal. There are many different kind of songs on this album - sometimes they sound like Morbid Angel, sometimes like a melodic act from Sweden and sometimes like Darkthrone. The most important trademark of Septicemia is however the many and elaborate melodies which can be found in both the slower songs and the more aggressive ones. Speaking of aggressive, the title track is a very nice song with a simple but still powerful riff pushing it forward all the way through. It is very rare to find a band that mixes brutality with melody in such a nice way. I think Septicemia have good possibilities to take the step out of the shadows if they don't stop improving and perhaps un-rough the vocals a little bit. It's just a pity that they weren't given a better production. Just listen to the amazing "Origin Of This World" and you would want this cd right away!
