REVIEW: Sepultura - Roorback Steamhammer Records, 2003
6/10
Sepultura - Roorback - cover art After the last album “Nation” everyone figured that Sepultura was done. “Nation” was not a good album. It was like getting drunk; starting off a little easy, getting a bit better, but afterwards you couldn’t remember shit. The new album “Roorback” is a lot better. Derrick Green does a wonderful job behind the microphone and as always Igor Cavalera provides that certain groove that is characteristic for Sepultura. The songs contain a lot of more melodic influences than before. Something that was also tried on “Nation” but failed to capture the listeners’ attention. All in all, this is an okay album. No more, no less. Of, course it depends on what you compare to. Sepultura is better than most bands today, but the band will never be the same. Changing the vocalist in a band is hard, considering that that’s what most people listen to. And the music is not as energetic as before. The best way to compare a band is to compare it to itself. Sepultura started off as a death metal band. They where known mostly in Brazil and released a few albums in Germany. The album that conquered the world was “Beneath the remains”, an album with so much energy and adrenaline that you couldn’t sit still. It was brutal! After that the sound changes slightly into the sound of “Roots” where there was this latin groove mixed with trashmetal. Both these albums are considered to be classics nowadays. The “Roots”-sound is the sound Sepultura has decided to keep. But it has already been done. Now’s the time for something new, and innovative. Change isn’t always a bad thing. Derrick Green has more possibilities hidden in his voice than Max Cavalera had. I’m sure he can come up with something. Until then, I can’t give this album a better grade. More energy and innovative thinking, people!
