REVIEW: Sepultura - The Best Of Sepultura Roadrunner Records, 2006
8/10
Sepultura - The Best Of Sepultura - cover art Sepultura is yet another subject in the current series of Roadrunner's Best-Of compilations also falling under the category of "The Roots of Roadrunner Records." Anyone claiming this band not to be massively important is out of their ever lovin' mind. I was first exposed, or rather hooked, upon hearing Beneath the Remains in 1990 or so. The sound was somewhere between Thrash and Death Metal with the primitive vocals indicating the latter, the lead guitars invoking the former, and everything else saying both. The following album, Arise, simply ruled. Regardless, Sepultura was a special band hailing all the way from Brazil, something unheard of then, really. Listening to this collection of Roadrunner-era tracks one can hear the progression from underground, semi-Death Metal inflected Thrash to world music flavored Metal all with some hardcore textures peeking through now and again. Anyhow, in 13 tracks the listener is treated to a trip down memory lane that includes most of the biggest songs produced by Max Cavalera and crew, although a curiosity or two appear ("Biotech is Godzilla" featuring Jello Biafra) and a killer song or three are omitted ("Mass Hypnosis" or "Propagand" anyone?). It's not like Roadrunner lacked the space, y'know. Anyhow, if you aren't that big of a fan but merely curious, this is a solid record. If you are a big fan, you already have all the best stuff and should pass as there is nothing exclusive about this release. According to this record Derrick Green does not exist and in the bigger sense of Sepultura, this may ring true even though Dante XXI is a fine record. Now that the other Cavalera has left the building is there anything left in the tank? Can you say "reunion" boys and girls?
