REVIEW: Serca - Singularity (EP) Self-financed, 2002
5/10
Serca - Singularity (EP) - cover art Serca is a new band hailing from the London area in the UK that was formed in 1999 by three young men who met right after starting a music degree at the Westminster University. At first they were known as Khaffar but they changed their name late last year in favor of Serca. They have taken the industrial sampling of Nine Inch Nails and mixed it with the tribal feel of Sepultura and the clean vocals of Deftones. All these bands highly depend on the ability to deliver a certain drive or energy through their music but unfortunately Serca hasn't really got that in them right now. Actually they may have what it takes in them but they have to delve deep and transform it into music which is not an easy task. It is necessary for them to find that spark though if they want to push the band forward which I'm sure they do. It feels as if they are a little too careful and afraid to let go and this holds them back. There are some nice heavy riffs such as on "Upload" but They have to improve both in the vocal department and when it comes to the song writing process if they want to impress on me. A little too chaotic and experimental for my taste I'm afraid + I have never liked Deftones that much. They do have a certain flow but nothing really sticks out of it.
