REVIEW: Serpentia - Dark Fields Of Pain Metal Mind Records, 2003
7.5/10
Serpentia - Dark Fields Of Pain - cover art We all know by now that there are plenty of good quality black and death metal bands in the big European country known to man as Poland but there are very few of them who stick out from the rest. One of the bands who do are Serpentia, a band that formed in 1996 / 1997 and are now releasing their second album "Dark Fields Of Pain". With a cover art depicting a man with a noose in one hand and a large broad-bladed and blood-tainted knife in the other you probably realize that this album is not about happiness and the joy of life. Instead the whole recording is surrounded by a dark and brooding atmosphere where not even the faintest light can enter. Even though you may not have heard of Serpentia before they are definitely not without experience as they have already played live with well-known Polish bands like Vader, Parricide, Whorehouse and Thy Disease. I wouldn't hesitate in referring to Serpentia as a death metal band but there are influences from many different genres shining through, making the final result quite interesting and colourful. The use of distorted spoken voices make them sound little industrial at times. Overall, "Dark Fields Of Pain" is a highly dynamic and varied recording from one of the most exciting Polish metal bands at the moment. I am definitely looking forward to hearing more from these guys in the future. Let's just hope that we don't have to wait another three years for their next album.
