REVIEW: Setherial - Death Triumphant Candlelight Records, 2006
5.5/10
Setherial - Death Triumphant - cover art Death Triumphant suffers from one fatal flaw which permeates the entire album: everything is slightly above average. This is fatal for the reason that the musicians of Setherial are all veterans of the scene and as such they should be able to produce an album of excellent quality. Despite this fact the album suffers from every angle of mediocrity and a distinct feeling of "Been there, done that." It was produced at Abyss studios so the production is by no means bad and in fact the flaws in it may have been intentional to add sort of a dark muddy quality to the recording. The music itself is reminiscent of several other bands in the scene not the least of which would be Marduk, very fast, very dark black metal with the classic rasps and the occasional catchy riff. However, by and large this is an album which had a great deal of potential and devolved into something entirely forgettable. I would recommend this only to fans of the band previously and people looking for a quick black metal fix.
