REVIEW: Seven 13 - Unleashed What Matters Records, 2002
7/10
Seven 13 - Unleashed - cover art Seven 13 is the new name chosen for the theatrical rock group from Boston, USA, that was formerly known as Coven XIII. Not much of a name change one might think but it is of course up to the band what they want to call themselves. I don't see much of a reason to change the name though since their new album continues in the same vein as their previous material with a progressive rock sound á la Yes or Rush enhanced with beautiful piano melodies courtesy of Amanda Adams and a charismatic yet somewhat rough vocal appearance from Kenneth Michael. This is a band where passion and creativity is allowed to flow freely and this is something which is strangely unusual in the music world of today where trends and fast money are the only things important. Since Seven 13 seem to have a very big interest in history and culture in general it would be nice to see them delve deeper into historic themes when it comes to the lyrics in the future. They have however composed a very nice set of songs that should please most fans of modern progressive rock with a nostalgic atmosphere. There are perhaps a little bit too many ballads but overall this is a very nice solid release, very much thanks to the beautiful piano melodies and powerful vocal effort. If you live in the Massachusetts area you might want to consider attending one of their live shows as well because they are certainly something out of the ordinary. Stand-out tracks: "Drink!", "Haunted", "Dianne".
