REVIEW: Seventh One - What Should Not Be Armageddon Music, 2004
7/10
Seventh One - What Should Not Be - cover art After several demo recordings, Sweden's Seventh One secure a contract with Massacre Records for the release of their debut album "Sacrifice" in 2002, a disc which received a warm welcome in the metal media. Those of you who are tired of Helloween or Rhapsody clones, knights and dragons should appreciate this much more than most other power metal releases today. 2004 finds the band on a new label, Armageddon Music, a company closely linked to the people behind the world famous Wacken Open Air festival and who are signing one quality band after another. Seventh One is no exception. Most of the band members have previously been active in the extreme metal scene and drummer Tobias Kjellgren was once a member of Dissection. While the instrumentalists are all of Swedish origin, the frontman Rino Fredh is from the neighbouring country in the west and was actually voted "Norwegian master of Heavy Metal" by Norwegian press in 2004, whatever that means...

Now on to the actual music. Seventh One have adopted a mid-tempo form of power metal which relies slightly more on heavy riffs than speed, leaving the band closer related to bands like Brainstorm and Metalium. The vocals from Rino Fredh are maintaining a high profile in most songs and the instrumental skills of his band mates are evident. The songs are well written and the use of solos is not exaggerated. On top of this the production of Lars Ratz (Metalium) provides the listener with a crystal clear and very heavy sound which definitely suits a band like Seventh One. These guys are experienced musicians who handle their instruments with ease but they lack the song writing skills necessary to reach the top, at least for now. Rino Fredh is a good vocalist but he is not a great one. "What Should Not Be" is a solid release and especially fans of Metalium should appreciate this album but if you want something that really sticks out then you should look further.
