REVIEW: Severe Torture - Butchery Of The Soul Hammerheart Records, 2002
8/10
Severe Torture - Butchery Of The Soul - cover art 6 songs here, including a Cannibal Corpse cover, on a split CD with Blood Red Throne. Severe Torture definitely caught my attention with their "Feasting on Blood" album last year, and they keep rolling on like a decapitated head with these 6 crushers. The Dutch quartet make no bones about being influenced by North American death metal, and you'll quickly pick up on the Cannibal Corpse influences with the title track opener. The transitions are very Floridian, as are many of the riffs, and the tempos are fast but digestible. I really like the snare sound Seth has, and his playing keeps getting better and better. It amuses me to think that he used to sing for the evil Dutch death metal outfit Centurian sometimes. A lot of talent! "Pray For Nothing" has a lot of moshable sections and tempo changes, but things really peak on the song "Taking Down the Descender". The song ends with a bludgeoning NYDM breakdown, which flows into a killer bass scale accompanied by the best drumming I've ever heard from Severe Torture. I think this song alone is worth the price of the CD. The Cannibal Corpse cover, "Perverse Suffering", is basically the original sped up a little bit, but seeing as that's one of my favorite Cannibal songs, it's not at all unpleasant to hear on this CD. FAVORITE TRACKS: Taking Down the Descender, Pray for Nothing.
