Debut release by the US-based act Shadar Logoth. The music these guys are playing is sort of a death/black metal with swedish reminiscences. Clean vocals and keyboards are added to the core of the whole thing, and I think these are two great flaws of these songs. The clean vocals roam in weakness and may resemble Fear Factory or Arcturus, if nothing else, with a respectable dose of imagination. They´re the worst thing here, in the third song for instance the listener is strongly tempted to press the skip button to avoid a several earache, what an awful passage... As for the keys, they´re simply horrible, easy and casiotone-esque, mainly consisting of boring chords following the main theme. They are sometimes hardly audible, so if they deflect from the main notes the overall effect can´t be appreciated. The production is quite dry and unprofessional, probably home-made, and does nothing but strengthen the amateurish trait of this release. No reverbs, no fresh effects on the guitars nor vocals. The instruments are imbalanced in the mix: the guitars are incredibly high, the drumming is a fuzz (especially in the fast parts) where the snare is the only hit saved from the burning. The tempo changes are too sudden and devoid of copy-paste movements. This could sound as a one man bedroom act, a quick release to get into the scene. Uninteresting black metal with amateur sound, ideas and arrangements. Good things? Well, the melodies are not bad, they´re simply dull and nothing special. A lot of work to be done, that´s my veredict.
