REVIEW: Shade - Isa Frowz Productions, 1998
8/10
Shade - Isa - cover art Black Metal quartet from Vinland, Shade, leaves on me a very good impression that I always want to have every time I'm listening to bands residing on these continents. The booklet claim that "Shade plays True Nordic Black Metal" and utter proof was this 3 song Mini-CD that heavily reminds me of early Gorgoroth, so to speak! But the claim of the band may or may not harm their sake for 'originality'. Though in my humble opinion, it may really harm them. Listening to this MCD; there’s the use of melodies, noise guitar (always buzzing), vocals, and the entire production literally, as if I was to say, all sounds like a Norwegian band. Not bad if you're a big follower of Norse Black Metal, but to some… I assume that this material will not be appealing! Suffice to say that Shade even print a one detestable statement against any other bands in their country. And well… this line of 'disassociation' seems to me like a contrary on what the booklet of Impaled Nazarene have stated before. However, I will no longer touch that kind of history, useless. Tuning guitars (almost into the state of feedback) starts the song, followed by fast grinding strings that almost freeze my spine. This kind of reaction was almost the same when I'm listening to to the entirety of "Under The Sign Of Hell" - what then?! Somehow, great are the vocals, and thanks to Vargr for giving us a wet and massive throat cancer holocaust. Well-worked voices for a well performed music. To sum all things up, Shade was an acceptable and a great band to continue the glorifying days of Northern Black Metal. The only major drawback here is that, this band has no intention to bring any kind of 'new' meal on the table. But this is an honor giving to the style of old, so why bother seeking for 'Electronic Black Metal' if you can have such a band like Shade. If you crave for Nordic Black Metal, then put your hands on this band. Absolutely one of the best releases made by Frowz Productions before the said label went to the grave.
