REVIEW: Shadeworks - Sooty Limbs Self-financed, 2001
6/10
Shadeworks - Sooty Limbs - cover art Shadeworks is the solo project of Arnaud Nicolas, drummer of the Belgian metal bands Obsidian (former) and Icy Winds (current). He started the project back in 1998 under the name Icy Winds At Dusk and released an instrumental demo tape called "Endless Snowfields". Now we are here in the year of 2001, three years later, and the project has developed into a more serious effort to create innovative and modern music. The music of Shadeworks is very atmospheric and slightly progressive, unlike any other band I've heard before. Unfortunately this isn't really my kind of thing it seems. The music is very nice as background music when doing something completely different like solving differential equations but it is not the type of music that makes you want to listen to it over and over again just for the beauty of it. There are some nice hightlights like the wonderful female vocals from Fae of Arnaud's other band Icy Winds and a couple of great melodies. Arnaud's vocals are almost gothic sounding and not that interesting. Duet singing from both Fae and Arnaud would however sound rather good I guess and perhaps that's an idea to explore in the future. Shadeworks is slow, atmospheric and soothing metal that might be something for Anathema fans (I'm not...).
