REVIEW: Shadows FX - Shadows FX Impact Records, 2001
4.5/10
Shadows FX - Shadows FX - cover art Putting Shadows FX into a category is not an easy task. The music ranges from thrash, to death light, to ballad-goth something. On top of that there are shrieky vocals, which are plainly horrible. Besides the name of the band the vocals are definitely the low point of the band. I personally think the band is at its strongest as the tempo drops and they go into ballad / goth-mode. The up-tempo thrashy stuff does not feel all that tight at times, and the riffs are quite boring. A good thing is that the bass (which appears to be played by quite a cute young woman) is clearly heard. The drums on the other hand sound really weak and could definitely use an injection of attitude. I think they should ditch the vocalist, stick to what they do best and they might actually create an album of quite high class. This could by small means get a whole lot better, and hopefully it will in the future. They certainly have some potential, and at times this album sniffs at quite high grades, but as a whole it won’t make the cut.
