I believe this is my first contact to Polish metal. Yes, Shadows Land comes from Poland, and they play some kind of brutal, progressive death metal. With progressive I mean: many tempo-changes, sudden style-changes etc. And with many I mean: MANY! “Ante Christum (Natum)” is in many ways the most sprawling album I have ever heard. It’s totally hysterical! I doubt that anyone could “learn” all these songs and I think that especially the drummer J Nerexo should receive some kind of medal. This record is quite well produced and that’s good, it would be very hard to hear what the guys are playing otherwise. And the music IS good. The bits and parts put together are great, but they work less well when they really are together. I like logic in what I’m hearing but that’s far from what Shadows Land deliver. Well, not always… Some songs are more songs than others are, and that’s good.
For the compulsory comparison with other bands when it comes to the sound I have chosen Fear Factory and Morbid Angel and in that case first and foremost the song “Blessed Are The Sick”. Adding some psycho-choirs on some songs. Really, it sounds like people screaming while their flesh is burning. Even though this record is that weird, it has been showed that it is great to have in the background while doing anything else… But every time those darn keyboard-things come I just get confused. What are they doing there?
Anyway, this record isn’t something I would spend much money on, even though it’s interesting music, and I still rather listen to records like Eternal Lies “Spiritual Deception” or something but please, if you think you might like it… Get it.
