REVIEW: Shape Of Despair - Illusions Play Spikefarm Records, 2004
7.5/10
Shape Of Despair - Illusions Play - cover art Even though a few of my favorite bands ever can be found in the genre known as doom metal, the genre as a whole does not interest me that much in particular. However, once in a while there comes a band that make a real lasting impression on me and one of those is definitely the Finnish funeral doomsters Shape Of Despair. These guys have been around for some time now and their new album "Illusion's Play" once again prove that there is no place of melancholy and misery such as Finland. The song "Entwined In Misery" says it all in three little words and could also have been a suitable title for the album. There has never been more suitable music for a funeral than what Shape Of Despair present to us but there is more than just tragedy, misery and woe here. Every member of the band is an experienced and skilled metal musician and together they make a very powerful composing squad. If you want to make doom metal sound interesting you have to be a very good song writer indeed. There is no doom metal band (nor has there ever been) who compose songs the way My Dying Bride do in my opinion but Shape Of Despair are not very far behind. If you are a fan of slow and mournful doom metal you can not go wrong with this album.
