REVIEW: Shattered Realm - From The Dead End Blocks Where Life Means Nothing Alveran Records, 2005
5/10
Shattered Realm - From The Dead End Blocks Where Life Means Nothing - cover art Fast hardcore with a touch of metal spiced with heavy breakdowns and gang chants. That is a pretty good description of what Shattered Realm sounds like on their latest album “From The Dead End Blocks Where Life Means Nothing”. Sounds familiar? That description could surely fit a lot of other bands as well. Shattered Realm has changed the sound a bit since “Broken Ties…Spoken Lies…”, much due to line-up changes. That has resulted in increased dynamics and more variation on this album. That is however not enough to make this an interesting record, even though it is heavy and aggressive. After a few songs of frenetic gang shouts and chugging breakdowns you feel like you have already heard them all. The aggressiveness and intensity does not quite reach the same level as their label mates Hoods. Predictable and uninteresting, still it is mosh-friendly material that’s well suited for the stage. When it comes to music, being predictable is not always a bad thing. But with bands like Madball and Hatebreed already perfecting this sound, Shattered Realm has nothing further to add.
