Shining Fury, the Italian power metal band fronted by Athena vocalist Francesco Neretti, has completed their sophomore album "Another Life". Fast-paced guitar riffs, high-pitched vocals and plenty of double bass drums should not make any fan of their debut album complain about the follow-up. This time the song arrangements have been taken to the next level however, resulting in a somewhat complex yet more intense album. Francesco Neretti is a gifted singer but, as Fabio Lione pointed out when I interviewed him a couple of days ago, like most power metal vocalists he uses a rather narrow range of his voice which becomes tiresome on occasion. In all honesty Shining Fury do not offer the genre anything new but they still pull it off rather nicely and well crafted songs like "Another Life", "The Haunting" and "Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde" quickly make me forgive them for their sins. I recently read a review of this album from Chronicles Of Chaos, a webzine generally long since regarded for its intelligent reviews and articles, more or less referring this band AND their fans to the garbage dump. That, to me, does not qualify as intelligent writing or even constructive reviewing but rather the complete opposite.
Like I said it would not do anyone justice to leave you with an impression of Shining Fury rejuvenating the power metal genre with their second album either but they are no simple Hammerfall clones. Stepping out of the generic Italian power metal marsh they perform some of the heaviest and most intense power metal there is without abandoning the European trademark sound. More memorable songs and less, conscious or not so conscious, hiding behind a wall of double bass drums and strike three should be even harder.
