REVIEW: Shogun - Iconoclast GoodFellow Records, 2001
9/10
Shogun - Iconoclast - cover art Shogun was a band that didn’t fall into one specific genre of metal music. While listening to “Iconoclast”, Shogun drags the listener through the worlds of hardcore, mathcore, death, thrash, jazz, and even some grind. Every song on this LP is memorable, with technical yet catchy riffs, and some sing-a-long lyrics. The lyrics are dark, which are accentuated by the screams and dementia vocal delivery. The music is heavy and aggressive as it jumps out and punches you straight in the face, but is also melodic when it deems fit. Warren’s raspy guttural vocals are frantic and complement the many tempo changes that the music takes. I can’t compare this band to any one specific band. It would be too easy to lump them in with the Dillinger Escape Plan, but that they are not. These Colorado natives are a force. They stand up to lead, or destroy whoever gets in their way. Shogun’s music is fucking real. It has a purpose; to be taken seriously!! A few of the songs include samples from movies, which sometimes can ruin the momentum of the music, but not here. Shoguns use of samples adds to the over-all effect of the album, they don’t stick out like a sore wound. My instant favorites are: Perth Epic, which has one of the greatest intro’s I have ever heard, then it leaps into a monstrous trashing song. Definitely a mosh pit favorite. Other greats are: Nation of Masochists, All signs point to the end, Three A.M. Nice Tie, Fortuitous Concourse of Atoms, and We Other Victorians. The later starts of with an acoustic guitar, and then destroys whatever is left of the listener’s hearing. Every song on this LP rocks. It has made a place in my top ten albums of all time list. It’s unfortunate that Shogun has decided to end their life. Although, plans are in the works for most of the band to stick together, and form a different band with a new name. Rest in Peace Shogun. -Chris “Diatribe” Rohde
