Earache has been known to put out some of the greatest metal bands of all time, however once in a while you come across a band that really wouldn't cause an ear ache. Shortie happens to be one of those bands. With their latest release, "Without A Promise", it's easy to see the talent that has yet to be recognized.
The feel of the album from track to track is that of alternative hard rock, but there is also a hint of emo to their sound. The music on the release is simple, yet most of the time catchy like on the opening track "All This Time", "Tired Of Running" and "The Way Things Are". However, there aren't many on there like that, as the band also has some ballad, more emo-esque sounding songs like "Truth".
The main let down of this release has to be the vocalist. Sadly, he sounds like practically every alternative hard rock vocalist out there. However, once in a while you get some screaming in the background, as if the band is trying to give a hardcore feel to the music. The screaming is incredible, and the album would definitely have sounded better if there were more of that.
Sadly this release is pretty much your cliché modern rock album. Chances are you've heard it, or the millions of clones, on your local hard rock or college rock radio station. "Without A Promise" is good for what it is, but there are various indications that this band has more talent than they let on, such as the noted screaming and intro to "The Way Things Are". But that's about it. If it's your taste, then it's a whole other story, but if you're sick of cliché modern rock bands that sound pretty much like the last, then this release really isn't for you.
