REVIEW: Siebenbürgen - Loreia Napalm Records, 1997
8.5/10
Siebenbürgen - Loreia - cover art Loreia is the debut album from the Swedish band Siebenbürgen after having been signed to Napalm Records, one of the finest record companies today. As you might expect from a band with the name Siebenbürgen (the old European name for Transylvania, home of Dracula) the music and lyrics revolves around old folklore and horror. Musically this album is perhaps most suitably described as black metal with a touch of melodic Iron Maiden riffing and traditional folk music. The vocals are both male and female. The male ones sound pretty black metal like and are done by Marcus Ehlin. The female vocals are not as prominent as you might wish on this release but are done very nicely by Lovisa Hallstedt who has a great voice. Sometimes she sings but she also does a "yoik-kind of a thing" in a couple of songs. The yoik is a kind of improvised chant sung by the Lapps in the north of Scandinavia. Lovisa also plays violin on this record. "Loreia" was recorded in April 1997 at Six String Studio. Unfortunately (for people outside Scandinavia and they are a couple...) the lyrics are written completely in Swedish on this and the band's second album but the music is still very good and worth the money even if you don't understand the lyrics.
