REVIEW: Siebenbürgen - Plagued Be Thy Angel Napalm Records, 2001
8.5/10
Siebenbürgen - Plagued Be Thy Angel - cover art Marcus Ehlin and his vampire friends of Siebenbürgen have yet again created a great album worthy of praise. The album starts off with some kind of intro that ends with a female voice saying: "If I show you heaven, you must show me hell". These songs do however contain more of hell than heaven even though Siebenbürgen seem to have a weird obsession with angels and all kinds of nightly events. This Swedish band is still on the rise and their last album "Delictum" showed great progress compared to their earlier workds. This time the progress is less notable but all the band's trademarks are still here - the nightly atmosphere, the elaborate male growling, the soft female vocals and a great mix between black metal and more straight-forward heavy metal influences. "Plagued Be Thy Angel" continues in the same vein as their previous release but they are still different from each other. The guitarwork is now more complex and so are the song structures. This is also the last album to feature the former members Linus Ekström and Kicki Höijertz who decided to leave the band right after the recordings of this album. The production is very powerful and the vocals are perhaps slightly better than last time. Altogether they manage to maintain the same quality as before which is not that common these days. Siebenbürgen remain as one of the leading Swedish black metal bands. They have created a unique sound of their own and there is still no other band like them.
