REVIEW: Sigma Draconis - De Rerum Natura Self-financed, 2003
7.5/10
Sigma Draconis - De Rerum Natura - cover art I’ve been listening to this CD a dozen times and still I can’t make a final opinion about it. This is pretty diverse Black Metal, going from atmosphere to speed and sometimes trying to piece these two together. I guess it’s just those parts that keep me away from forming a precise image, since they don’t fit into any category and sometimes do not sound catchy either. The CD contains eleven songs, two of which are interludes. The songs are very long, up to 10 minutes almost and no less than five. Music is as I said Black metal, with keyboards. Sometimes keys are too noticeable, sometimes they are the right spice. In every song there is a good riff and a good part, but usually also something I have already heard. Now you know why I couldn’t make up my mind. My biggest complaint is about the drums; if the band claims they play blasting Black metal, then the drums should be blasting and storming. Instead, apart from some good parts, I have the impression that they are trying to catch up with the rest of the band. Correct them in parts that demand speed and the entire album will go one step up. Another one is that in a song or two I wondered if the song lasted for 15 minutes, or what. It lost intensity with repetitive parts. It’s obvious that these guys are trying to use music as a medium to express their views, combined with lyrics, and that makes the entire material more serious. The production is ok, as I can notice, nothing to complain about. Also, looking at the promo material, photos and lyrics especially, I had to notice that Sigma Draconis take all this very seriously, a bit more than the usual debut band. Perhaps I have been to hard on them, as they seem to show ability to deliver very good music.
