You may or may not
believe me but this album is one of the best debut releases I've heard in a
long time, especially in the black metal genre. When looking at the song
titles you might expect this to be just another Cradle Of Filth wanna-be band
but that is not the case even though there are certain traces of their sound
to be found here. The first two tracks aren't something that will keep you
glued to the stereo speakers but the rest of the album is filled with superb
black metal vocals, beautiful melodies and the equally beautiful female vocals
from an American girl named Sarah. What makes it so much better is that the
band includes a very talented keyboard player. I also love the nice accoustic
passages which add an extra dimension to the sound. Signs Of Darkness is a
band from Belgium that has been existing since 1995 but it wasn't until last
year that they gained the attention they deserved from the native upcoming
label LSP who decided to sign them for three albums. "Beyond The Autumn
Leaves" is actually one of the best and most atmospheric black metal releases
of the year and this shows a lot of promise for the future. With a more
powerful production this band could touch the skies and become one of the
really big, at least if they stick to their own sound. You might describe
their sound as a musical potion of Old Man's Child, Dismal Euphony and early
Opeth. Let's just hope that they don't change direction because Signs Of
Darkness have found an almost perfect atmosphere that they sould hold on to.
The future of metal looks bright. The vocals, both male and female, on this
album are world class!
