REVIEW: Sigrblot - Blodsband (Blood Religion Manifest) Nordiska Förlaget, 2003
7/10
Sigrblot - Blodsband (Blood Religion Manifest) - cover art The Swedish band Sigrblot obviously tries to make people believe that their concept is not a political one but of "spiritual origin". Lyrical inspiration from folks like Alfred Rosenberg, Savitri Devi and Wulf Sörensen, samples spoken in German and the symbols in use makes that a bit hard to believe though. Several magazines have refused to review this debut album of their's for such reasons but Tartarean Desire stands for free speech and we, unlike Sigrblot, have absolutely no political views that are the unified opinion of Tartarean Desire. We have our own, probably also very diverse, personal views on these subjects but they are not intended for this website. Therefore I will review this album and also focus solely on the music herefrom. Something I appreciate about this album is the somewhat mythological and ancient atmosphere surrounding it. There are even some Gregorian chanting found here which is not exactly what I expected. These elements aside "Blodsband" is pretty much a black metal affair, influences mainly stemming from the early Norwegian and Swedish scenes. They make very little of an effort describing their music and their influences in the promotional bio and I base these conclusions on what the album sounds like and nothing else which means that I could be wrong. Sigrblot have been around since 1996 and it shows. The album is competently composed and the music executed by a group of musicans who know exactly what they're doing. It is tight, the vocals and all instruments fit well into the whole sound and there is not much to complain about in that department. However, there is not much variation in the fast sections which is where a black metal band needs to put in extra effort trying to accomplish something memorable and not just a large number of riffs put after each other. This is definitely not worse than most other professional releases in the genre but it doesn't exactly stand out either.
