When I listened to the first track of this album I though
right away "not another Judas Priest clone". I had had enough with the
foolishly sounding Primal Fear but luckily Silent Force turned out to be a
much more pleasant experience. The vocals on the first track sound very close
to Judas Priest as do those on the Priest cover "All Guns Blazing" but on
the rest of the tracks the vocals are very varied and extremely well done.
Silent Force consist of several talented musicians like the former Royal Hunt
vocalist DC Cooper and Alex Beyrodt who used to be a member of Primal Fear
(which I'm glad he left...). This is the second album from the band and what
they have managed to achieve is close to amazing. The vocals are breathtaking,
the music is highly technical with lots of nice solos and melodies but also
great heavy metal riffs in the Gamma Ray vein and even the ballad "In Your
Arms" sounds wonderful. The last one also features the duet vocals from
Cooper and Finland's Inka Auhaugen. The best tracks on the album are "Fall
Into Oblivion", "Last Time", "In Your Arms" and the ambitious roman
trilogy in the middle of the album which features a real orchestra intro,
written by Rage guitarist Victor Smolski and recorded in Minsk with his father
and the White Russian Symphony Orchestra. When listening to bands like Gamma
Ray and now Silent Force you realize that metal has developed a lot since the
days of Manowar and Judas Priest. They do beat Stratovarius but they are not
quite as good as Gamma Ray yet. If you are a fan of European power metal this
is a must-have.
