Silent Scythe was formed a few years ago by former members of the Swedish melodic death metal band Brimstone, a band who released one album for Nuclear Blast before fading away for reasons that are unknown to me. This is a band who take what they do very seriously and band founder Tommi Djukin invested nearly 10.000 Euros to record this album before even having signed a deal with the Karmageddon sublabel New Aeon Media. It is not very surprising that Silent Scythe share several characteristics with Brimstone as some of the members are the same but "Suffer In Silence" stands out among other Swedish death / thrash metal releases. The well-known Gothenburg sound has been thrown into a mixing bowl together with more American sounding influences á la Nevermore and Iced Earth. When so many bands just follow in the footsteps of At The Gates and In Flames it is really refreshing to hear something like this. Silent Scythe still has a few things to learn about song writing but they are on the right track so far. I am glad to hear that they have added a new vocalist since this album was recorded as well because Tobias Jansson's screams and shouts do not always sound too good. His clean voice is good enough but it seems as if he's trying too hard to imitate Matthew Barlow and he doesn't quite have what it takes to compete with his impressive vocal power. Silent Scythe is nonetheless an interesting band worth looking into if you want something more than the same old worn-out melodic death metal melodies.
