After three full-length albums for Spikefarm Records, Finland's gothic metallers Silentium now make their debut recording for their new label Dynamic Arts Records available to the public. Several things have changed within the band since the 2003 release "Sufferion - Hamartia Of Prudence". First of all they have left the violins behind them, they have been rejoined by original drummer Jari Ojala and they have replaced their female vocalist with Riina Rinkinen from Caledonian, the fourth female vocalist in the band since 1998. She has a very emotional and passionate voice well suited for Silentium's gloomy yet melodic sound and it works well together with her male counterparts although she carries the main part of the weight throughout these eight songs. She masters everything from soft, tender singing to more aggressive rock vocals which makes her a welcome addition to the band. She reminds me a lot of Helena Iren Michaelsen (Epica, Impera, ex-Trail Of Tears) actually although she doesn't have quite the same power to back up her voice. While the band has indeed parted ways with their violin player they have introduced another classical instrument, the cello (played by Elias Kahila), in order to keep us fully submerged in a sea of melancholy. The music itself does not live up fully to the beautiful album cover but many fans of the genre will probably appreciate the dark, crisp and tender atmosphere of "Seducia".
