REVIEW: Sinamore - A New Day Napalm Records, 2006
6.5/10
Sinamore - A New Day - cover art Since there is a prevalent opinion among metal and "true" rock fans in general that HIM and Bon Jovi are lame wannabe rock stars I am not surprised that this album has caused quasi journalists to lash out their spikes and other pointy items at the Finnish newcomer Sinamore. The band has described themselves as sounding like "Katatonia meets HIM while gangbanging Bon Jovi". To be brutally honest, their debut album "A New Day" is not a groundbreaking masterpiece but it is far from as bad as many self-proclaimed know-it-alls have implied to their unsuspecting readers. Sinamore has chosen a rather straight-forward path, letting rather simple song structures lay the foundation for subtle shifts and melodies and provide a solid background for the clearly most important element in the music of Sinamore - the vocals of Mikko Heikkilä. A strong frontman is extremely important for a gothic rock or metal band and his clear and deep vocals are perfect for this album. "A New Day" does however show signs of a young band yet to mature as there are very few ups and downs. Something needs to break the intense, bleak and gloomy atmosphere that surrounds the album, at least once in a while. I don't really care what it is, just something to break or enforce the dark veil. "Fallen" is the only track that really stands out from the rest with its beautifully suicidal solo vocals. Recommended for fans of the darkly romantic music of bands like Charon and To/Die/For. A decent dose of Finnish melancholy but more diversity next time is absolutely necessary for the band to go anywhere.
