Since the Day is by no means the first band to, in the words of their biography, contain “influences from black/death metal to modern hardcore” and “driving emotional moments.” The German band’s first full-length is entitled El Mensajero no es importante, which in English is “the messenger is not important.” While at first it may seem appropriate to lump the record in with the great mass of metalcore releases we have seen recently, on closer inspection the band does differ slightly from the rest of the pack. For one thing, the band eschews the standard Gothenburg riffing that is all the rage these days. The vocalist also opts for a black metallish rasp that for the most part just doesn’t fit in well with the riffing.
Unfortunately, in this case, being different does not always make a great album. The riffs are frankly kind of boring and the vocalist is not all that great either. The first track “Welcome to the Show” starts off with an uninspired riff and then just kind of slowly plods through four boring minutes. It seems as if the band is just going through the motions. “From Day to Day” gives the listener a first taste of the clean vocals that appear in most of the tracks. Things get better on “Lunar Eclipse,” which starts off with a catchy riff and has a nice chorus. For me the low point in the record is the last song “Mascara Eyes,” which is mostly clean vocals and has a chorus that sounds like it was sung by the Linkin Park singer.
Though it may seem like I think this record is the worst thing I have heard all year, that is certainly not the case. Since the Day are talented musicians and certainly inject a lot of emotion into their music. Maybe I have just grown tired of hearing the same old metal meets hardcore combination but I just could not get into the El Mensajero no es importante at all. What is comes down to is that the record, while not awful, is merely average.
