REVIEW: Sinister - Afterburner Candlelight Records, 2006
8/10
Sinister - Afterburner - cover art Anyone who likes old school death metal has to be a pretty happy camper in terms of what has been happening here in 2006. With new albums from Cannibal Corpse, Suffocation, Vader, & Grave (amongst others) there is enough to please Mr. Death Metal fan no matter what side of the Atlantic he/she is on. Not to get lost in the shuffle is the latest release from Dutch veterans Sinister. When we last heard from these guys somewhere around 2004 they had apparently called it a day. Afterburner marks their return from retirement and what a return it is. Released in April of 2006 Afterburner sees the band sounding more potently powerful then they have in years. Gone is female vocalist Rachel Heyzer who appeared on the last two records, to be replaced by non other than original member and former drummer Aad Kloosterwaard. Whether is was this line up change or perhaps just some well deserved time off which rejuvenated the band it is hard to say, but one thing for certain is that this disc excels where the last couple did not. The song writing has noticeably been turned up a notch as a brutal barrage of hard hitting riffs, screeching solos, and multiple tempo changes in each and every song await the listener. This is death metal performed in an old school way with just the right amount of modern touches. Sinister have always been somewhat of a “no frills” death metal act and this straightforward approach has seen then survive for 16 years in the genre. On Afterburner, you are not going to find a lot of experimentation, or deviations from this winning formula, but death metal fans will find the right amount of diversity to make for an intoxicating experience. Bottom Line-- Almost essential and highly recommended death metal listening.
