Sinner, another band that I had heard of but went unnoticed by my proverbial radar until the late 90's, when I was tasked with a review of The Nature of Evil. Since then I've enjoyed Mat Sinner's (Primal Fear) work, mainly because he remains unpretentious. He does what he does and he does it well. You can always expect hard driving heavy Rock/Metal music, always in the pocket, potatoes and gravy melodies (they stick!), and songs that sound so tight because Sinner keeps it simple, without a bunch of unnecessary bravado. Similar to AC/DC in that you'll never find a drum fill or guitar overlay that doesn't belong there, and if it doesn't knock you out, you'll at least get a nice shot to the balls... and you know how a shot to the balls can linger for a bit!
So what will you hear? Blues-based hard music, very traditional, at moments going a bit 80's American like on "Revolution" or Thin Lizzyesque on "Heart of Darkness" and "Connection," the latter being so similar that I had to look and see if it was a cover tune. There's some really sweet mid tempo rockers like "Unbreakable" which harkens back to some 80's styled Sinner and "Break the Silence," which features a blazing guitar solo from Henny Wolter (also of Primal Fear). Maybe I'm just a sensitive guy but the slow almost ballad "Until it Hurts" is a great song, with squarely placed guitar leads and a fine vocal job by Mat himself. I also wanted to give a quick mention of drummer Klaus Sperling (ex-Primal Fear -- sensing a pattern here?) who provides great feel and doesn't have this over bearing need to step outside the song, staying in the design, making smart use of simplicity.
Crash & Burn jams with energy and almost definitive style. It's probably occasion for Mat Sinner to finally be given his place in the lore of German Metal along with Accept, Kai Hansen, and Doro. There's 30 years worth of catalogue he's got in the bag, the last 20 of which are certainly of the ilk worthy of recognition, and I didn't even mention his work in Primal Fear.
