REVIEW: Sirenia - An Elixir For Existence Napalm Records, 2004
9.5/10
Sirenia - An Elixir For Existence - cover art Sirenia was formed in 2001 when Morten Veland left Tristania to create the music he had in mind, but which couldn't be accomplished with his former band. Even though Tristania lost its vocalist, guitar player, main songwriter and text composer, the underground scene got a new band which already gained lots of respect with their debut "At Sixes And Sevens". The follow-up album "An Elixir For Existence" continues that way and is definitely one of the best gothic metal / rock albums released in the past years. The album offers quite a lot of different musical elements such as different kinds of vocals: choirs, female vocals, growls, clean male vocals and much more. Furthermore there are as well death and black metal elements included as gothic metal and classic influences. Add some atmospheric keyboards, powerful guitar-melodies, violins to create a melancholic, mystical and dark atmosphere. There are so many differences in the songs that you can't really tell which parts are the best. One of them is definitely the wide range of vocals, then of course the choirs and background elements like violins and keyboards. For sure there are some similarities to Tristania, but you could say that Sirenia is more atmospheric and less aggressive than Veland's former band. Basically the whole album is a great piece of music, but there are some songs I'd like to present. First of all there is "Lithium and a Lover" with driving melodies, growling vocals and also these nice choirs, "Seven Sirens and a Silver tear", an instrumental song with beautiful piano melodies and some soft choirs in the background and last but not least "Voices within", rather fast with fantastic melodies (keyboards, violins) and again great choirs. To sum it up I would say that this is a very good album and the more you listen to it the more you'll like it. If you liked the debut, you will love this one here.
