REVIEW: Six Feet Under - Commandment Metal Blade Records, 2007
5.5/10
Six Feet Under - Commandment - cover art Keith Bergman makes me laugh. "Arguing about the subtle differences between Six Feet Under records is a lot like debating the finer points of stepping in cow shit or pig shit." Pure comedy. I suppose he is mostly correct in regards to at least the last few SFU (bowel) releases but with Commandment the band has returned to the sound that made them arguably (more) famous. The musicians in the band have at least reverted to what worked best, as openly admitted by bassist Terry Butler's "this is kind of back to what our fans would expect" comment about the new record going so far as suggesting the previous couple of clunkers were "experimental." I bet Chris Barnes will blame some bad weed.

It's simple, has some groove, pummels a bit, shreds a tad, and then it's done. Largely disposable at this point in their now repetitive career, Commandment is essentially a by the numbers affair in Death Metal of the distinctly non-technical, undead vein. If you seek inspiration from Barnes, check out his work with Torture Killer. Yeah, that band is not too dissimilar from SFU but it at least sounds like someone cared. This thing was slapped together with a bucket of Buds, buds, and, uh, buddies, in 12 days and it shows, particularly in the tired lyrics. How else would one reasonably explain mention of a meat cleaver in a song called "The Edge of the Hatchet"? Put the pipe down, Cap'n Cannabis. Even the art is derivative.
