REVIEW: Six Feet Under - Death Rituals Metal Blade Records, 2008
5.5/10
Six Feet Under - Death Rituals - cover art So far I've never been a great fan of Six Feet Under and I think there are many reasons for this. Among them, musical oversimplicity relying way too much on Chris Barnes' unpure vocals. The sound has also always been too polished for what they pretended to be. Death Rituals may start to make me change my mind though. Of course the fundamentals are still here. I mean Six Feet Under will never play atmospheric metal but I think the whole thing is more consistent than what it used to be some time ago with these ACDC covers that really made no sense to me. At that time, I think the band was looking for some entertainment but that never had the same effect on me unfortunately...

From the first notes of Death Rituals you can hear this time will be a bit different. What I like the most is that the sound is crunchier and dirtier. Not really grindcore like but something inbetween, more suitable to a very low and heavy doom death metal. And then you can pick up a Deicide touch from time to time, or even a little something of Death (Killed In Your Sleep). And, of course, Obituary is never far away either. On the whole nothing original for sure but at least easy to listen to and quite well done musically speaking. Slightly more than average.
