REVIEW: Skepticism - Farmakon Red Stream, 2003
7/10
Skepticism - Farmakon - cover art Many of you Skepticism fans have for sure been waiting for this album since last year when the Finnish doomsters released their mini album "The Process Of Farmakon". Now the dawn of the world is finally coming close as we are invited to a journey into darkness and depression where no sunlight flickers. We can not see the horizon because of the thick mist in front of us and we have only loneliness, agony and death to keep us company. Do you feel joy? Do you feel comfort? Do you feel secure? Well, that is not the point of the music that Skepticism perform. Instead they aim to show us the deepest and darkest corners of the human mind, those places where light does not reach. These guys have been doing their own funeral doom thing since the early 90s and have a lot of experience to lean back on as they release their third full-length album on the American label Red Stream, a label they have been loyal to since 1996 when they released their debut "Stormcrowfleet". At times the music of "Farmakon" remind me of the early material from My Dying Bride although Skepticism are slightly more minimalistic. There are aggressive growling passages but also more ambient sections. Their characteristic use of organ sounds also help to make this the perfect soundtrack to a funeral. Not exactly the most technical and advanced music there is but if you do not grasp the atmosphere and feelings behind the music then I guess doom is not for you. Recommended if you think this is your thing but it is definitely not for everyone to like.
