REVIEW: Skepticism - Stormcrowfleet Red Stream, 1996
9/10
Skepticism - Stormcrowfleet - cover art Clad in a thick somber mist, in an oppressive atmosphere of despair and wielding a black clouds sentiment, Skepticism appeared in the dark to show that other side of extreme music, that behemothical immensity called "funeral doom metal", carried to unearthly extremes of intensity. Watch the cover art, featuring a raven which seems to stare at us, into hiding. What a proper ushering to our entrance to the blackened universe that these guys are offering. We, innocent souls that wander the Earth desperately, have the chance to feel the grandiose magnificence of Skepticism and their brand of metal, conformed by uncompromising ultra slow songs where dour lyrics are sung through inhuman growlings from the very depths of sorrow: here we can listen to incredibly melancholic, depressive melodies and ambiences provided mainly by that organ, whose presence is absolutely essential to grasp the core of the Skepticism sound. To complete a perspective of “Stormcrowfleet”, we should add the landscapes created by down-tuned distorted guitars, remarked by the imbalanced production that almost silences the high frequencies and gives preponderance to the low textures of the music, being the result a messy, obscure sound that is similar to a dark lake at night – only the brave and those who hear the call are able to get into its waters and feel the magic. Despite of that, I think the sound isn´t a big problem if you are ready to let the music invade your veins, it´s audible enough for a trained listener, and its dirty trait maybe even helps to the overall purpose of the album, but that´s just an opinion of my own. Not an album for everyone, that´s evident. Depressive, quite slow, dark, majestic and monumentally tragic. Love it or leave it, yeah, this is that kind of album... These Finnish musicians will give you fifty seven minutes of desolation made music if you are willing to listen to it. Now, you choose...
