REVIEW: Skepticism - The Process Of Farmakon (EP) Red Stream, 2002
7/10
Skepticism - The Process Of Farmakon (EP) - cover art The masters of funeral doom are soon to release their long awaited full-length album "Farmakon" but awaiting that one we are to enjoy this taster mini album which contains two classic Skepticism tracks. The reason why they have been labelled as funeral doom is that their brand of doom metal is very slow and depressive which is the way a funeral usually feels like. Finnish people are for some reason more depressive than others and the suicide rates are very high in Finland compared to many other countries. I doubt that Skepticism is to blame for this but they are to blame for making excellent doom metal for a decade. The music is heavy and slow, wonderfully enhanced by the use of an organ, and the vocals are the deepest possible growls. Skepticism has been able to make growling sound depressive instead of aggressive which is not an easy task. I should perhaps have rated this release higher but since it is only a mini album I rest my case until the full-length arrives some time later this year. A very fine band that you should get to know closer if you are into depressive music in general and doom metal in particular.
