REVIEW: Skew Siskin - What The Hell Steamhammer Records, 1999
8/10
Skew Siskin - What The Hell - cover art This little known German band is offering some kind of straight forward, but well done, metal sounding a bit like Led Zeppelin with a big difference. The singer is a bitch by the name of Nina C. Alice. I don't mean to be insulting but a girl singing lyrics such as: "Don't need no romance to get in my pants"; "My way, your way, screw it in, screw it out, kiss my lips, the one I don't eat with..." see what I mean. Not that I'm offended by it since I'm a big fan of Frank Zappa with over fifty cds from him, so I've heard it all. Anyway, the music is up tempo and strong and the singer has a rough type of voice from too much party and sex... The overall sounds good and somewhat similar to the above mentioned superband or even AC/DC. Catchy songs like "Life's A Bitch", "Shoot Out Your Lights", "Head Up Your Ass" have rather simplistic musical phrases but remain effective even if not sophisticated. The most interesting part is on songs number seven and eight. The first one sounds like "Black Dog" from Led Zep with its pounding drums, echos on the vocals and drums. The second one is more melodic and the "girl's" voice is more harmonious than on the other songs. We can also hear acoustic guitar on this one. I started losing interest around the last four or five songs but "Voodoo Doll" ends it all with a good tune.
