With opening words like "Life sucks...and then you die" and
"I want to kill everyone...Satan is our pal"
Skinless is certain to impress
a lot of revolting and alcohol consuming teenagers all over
the world but
fortunately there is real substance beyond the rough exterior of these
Americans.
The self-financed previous release from Skinless, called
"Progression Towards Evil",
has so far sold more than 11000 copies which
is pretty impressive. They have now been signed
and this album marks their
entrance into the Relapse hall of fame. Thick walls built with the best of
metal
riffs, fast grinding but still melodic sections and ultra-guttural
explosive growling vocals
are the most important stones in the powerful and
solid Skinless foundation and their guitar
work shows some very eminent
skills that have been absorbed from years of hard work and suffering.
The
vocals are a lot darker and deeper than Morbid Angel and the lyrics are gorier
but
they are of course not seriously meant but seemingly more to be
considered as a humorous
substitute or complement to scary movies. We all
need our share of horror, don't we? Some of us watch
the news and criminal
documentaries, some read ghost and horror stories and the rest
listen to
metal... Well, it doesn't really matter what the lyrics are like
unless
you're one of those who read through all the lyrics while listening
(I admit, I am often
like that...) because if you can hear a word or two
apart from the spoken ones you are a very talented listener! Morbid
Angel
lacked a lot of creativity and energy on their last release but Skinless are
new and
ready to rock on, if not with the same skills then at least with a
lot more intensity and
sheer power.
